The California attorney general’s office has filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court to collect a $5,000 civil penalty from a convalescent hospital at which a retarded woman patient allegedly was raped and impregnated a year ago. The penalty had been assessed last June against Mirada Hills Convalescent Hospital in La Mirada after an investigation into the incident. Investigators found that the 35-year-old woman, identified only as Laura E., was sexually assaulted while in restraints to keep her from detaching tubes attached to her body. Her pregnancy was detected 19 weeks later while she was being X-rayed and she had an abortion, the suit states.
