College Tennis Roundup : Top-Ranked Chapman Still Undefeated in CCAA Action
The Chapman College men’s tennis team, ranked No. 1 in the nation among NCAA Division II schools, defeated Cal State Los Angeles, 8-1, in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match in Los Angeles Thursday.
In the No. 1 singles, top-ranked Troy Turnbull of Chapman defeated Steve Scott, 6-2, 7-5. The Panthers’ Paul Wekesa beat Randy Charles, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 2 singles match. Chapman is 4-0 in the CCAA and 4-3 overall while Cal State L.A. fell to 1-3 and 1-6. The Panthers play host to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, the third-ranked team in Division II, at 10 a.m. Saturday.
In South Coast Conference community college men’s action:
Rancho Santiago 6, Cypress 3--The Dons (1-1) defeated the Chargers at Rancho Santiago. The Dons’ No. 1 doubles team of Ed Root and Jeff Westover played well in defeating Bruce Beinlich and Matt Devine, 7-6, 6-3. Cypress (1-1, 1-3) received their top performance when Beinlich beat Mike Peltz, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 1 singles match.
In South Coast Conference women’s action:
Golden West College 6, Cerritos 3--The Rustlers (6-0) beat the Falcons at Golden West. Terri Johnson helped Golden West by coming from behind to win the No. 1 singles, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. She later teamed with Val Spinoza to win the No. 1 doubles, 7-6, 3-6, 6-0.
