McGuigan Wins in 14th to Keep His Title
DUBLIN, Ireland — Barry McGuigan retained his World Boxing Assn. featherweight title Saturday when referee Ed Eckert stopped his bout against Danilo Cabrera at 1:40 of the 14th round.
McGuigan, who finished the fight with a cut under his left eye, finally managed to floor the durable Dominican, but Cabrera stood through most of an eight-count, then appeared confused as the referee told him to fight on.
McGuigan waited while Cabrera groped on the canvas, trying to pick up his mouthpiece. Ecker watched carefully, then finally lost patience with the challenger and declared McGuigan the winner.
McGuigan’s record is 29-1-0. Cabrera’s is 24-3-0.
