KICKY
Yao Li, a Chinese kung fu master residing in Boston, decided the best way to bring martial arts into the Western mainstream is through rock ‘n’ roll. . . .
So get ready for the first kung fu music video, “I Want to Be a Warrior,” now in postproduction at Cambridge’s Inhouse Studios.
The narrative concerns a kung fu clash between gangs, with the prize a ceremonial sword (Li and his kung fu troupe provide the talent). Music by Inhouse’s David Collett has been timed to the kung fu kicks and choreography, with additional sounds of swords hitting wood, feet kicking bags and kung fu warriors saying “huugh!” The project is supervised by Ken Caillet, producer of Fleetwood Mac’s records.
The producers are “trying to start a new genre called kung fu music video,” said one.
