A Long Beach police officer has been charged in the rape last October of a 20-year-old woman assigned to the destroyer tender Prairie, docked in Long Beach, the district attorney’s office said. Authorities said the woman was waiting outside a Long Beach bar for a friend when the officer, Robert Lee Bellew, 38, offered her a ride. Bellew, driving an unmarked Long Beach police car, allegedly drove the woman to a dirt road near the Vincent Thomas Bridge, where he allegedly raped her and forced her to orally copulate him. Free on $10,000 bail, Bellew is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 19. He has been suspended from duty pending outcome of the matter.
