Crown Zellerbach reported a net loss of $26.8 million for 1985, attributing it to a third-quarter pretax restructuring expense. The restructuring cost involved a charge of $196.5 million, the company said. It included costs and write-downs associated with selling, closing or consolidating some operations and services, reducing other services and personnel and the hiring of legal and financial advisers during the restructuring. Timber and wood products earnings were up for 1985, but operating earnings at Zellerbach’s paper and container businesses declined from year-earlier levels. The company said the drop was due primarily to lower prices for commodity grades.
