Eight Los Angeles battered women’s shelters shared in $50,000 paid by the city to settle a $2-million class-action suit against the Los Angeles Police Department by three women who complained that police did not respond adequately to domestic violence calls. Along with the financial settlement, the department now has a procedure treating domestic violence as criminal behavior, said Lora Weinroth, attorney for the Battered Women’s Legal Counseling Unit, which filed the suit. City Councilwoman Joy Picus and City Controller Rick Tuttle gave a check for $6,250 to each of the eight shelters.
