A 61-year-old transient died Thursday in UCSD Medical Center while in custody on a misdemeanor charge, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reported.
Maximo Mesa, an unemployed laborer, died of systems failure due to chronic alcoholism after two weeks in the hospital, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
Mesa was taken to the hospital after being arrested for failure to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge of attempted burglary.
