The federal Board of Geographic Names has approved naming a 9,000-foot Sierra Nevada peak in honor of a ski patrol member killed in an avalanche in April, 1982. The peak above Emerald Bay on Lake Tahoe near Bliss State Park will be named Jake’s Peak in honor of Jeff (Jake) Smith, who was a member of the ski patrol at Alpine Meadows. He was warning others to get out of a danger zone when the avalanche killed him and five others.
