BRIEFLY : Pierce to Hold Postseason Bowl Game

A postseason community college football bowl game has been awarded to Pierce College by the state’s commission on athletics, Bob O’Connor, Pierce’s athletic director, announced Tuesday.

Co-sponsored by the San Fernando Valley Kiwanis Club and Pierce, the Kiwanis-Brahma Bowl will be held Dec. 7.

The game is expected to attract the top community college teams from the Southland. Teams will be selected from a list issued by the state commission on athletics.

Two Golfers Play a 180-Hole Marathon

There was no record at stake, no charity to aid and no prize money involved.

Yet Tom Clark and Rick Pendergast walked on the course at Woodland Hills Country Club Monday at 5:25 a.m. and didn’t leave until 7:40 p.m.--180 holes later.

“We did it just for the hell of it,” said Clark, 20, who was a member of last season’s Cal State Stanislaus golf team, the NCAA Division III champion. “We heard about the guys who played 171, and just decided to see how many we could play.”

Clark, a member of the Woodland Hills club, and Pendergast, an assistant pro there, completed more holes for fun than a pair of club pros playing for charity July 7.

That was when head pro George Thompson and assistant pro Greg Graham of Candlewood Country Club raised $7,100 by finishing 171 holes. Thompson is the Southern California PGA chairman of National Golf Day fund-raising program.

There is no standing record for most holes played by a twosome, according to the Guiness Book of World Records. Ian Colston, however, played 401 holes solo at Victoria, Australia, in November, 1971. Colston holds the record for most holes played in 24 hours.

Mazur Released by 49ers

John Mazur, the former El Camino Real High quarterback who quit the USC football program three years ago after losing his starting job, was released Monday by the world-champion San Francisco 49ers.

A starter for the Trojans as a sophomore, Mazur lost his job to Sean Salisbury only to play briefly for Texas A & M.

The 6-2, 208-pound Mazur had been signed as a free agent by the 49ers.
