Cummins Engine will lay off 2,200 workers.
Cummins, a leading producer of heavy-duty diesel engines, said the layoffs will take place over the next few weeks because of what the company called “a rapid reduction in demand for engines” by truck makers. The laid-off workers will include clerical, technical and salaried personnel, the company said. Cummins said it has been told by its major customers that they are cutting manufacturing rates sharply. The company also said it expects lower second-quarter operating profits.
