Chief of Tactical Air Command Mourned at Bases Around U.S.
HAMPTON, Va. — About 4,000 Langley Air Force Base personnel Wednesday joined mourning relatives of Gen. Jerome O’Malley in a tribute to the Tactical Air Command chief who died with his wife and three men in a plane crash.
As the last note of taps sounded, four F-15 Air Force jets screamed overhead with one jet pulling away to form the missing man formation--a salute to fallen military comrades. Similar memorial services were held at TAC bases around the country.
O’Malley, 53, of Carbondale, Pa., and his wife, Diane, 52, were killed Saturday when their jet overran a runway near Scranton, Pa. Lt. Col. Lester Newton, 39, of Ridgeland, S.C.; Capt. Harry Haugh, 26, of Kankakee, Ill.; and Tech. Sgt. Robert Eberflus, 35, of Toledo, Ohio, also were killed.
