Servite’s Four-Run Seventh Beats Bishop Montgomery

Servite High School’s four runs in the seventh inning proved to be the winning edge in a 7-6 victory over Bishop Montgomery in Angelus League action Tuesday at Servite.

Servite (4-2 in league) trailed 6-3 in the seventh inning when winning pitcher Jim Samford’s RBI single sparked a Friar rally. Servite scored on a balk after Eric Buechele’s loaded the bases, then Jason Rolish helped tie the game, 6-6, when he singled to drive in a run.

The Friars’ winning run came on Tim Rosenkranz’s bunt with runners at first and third.

In the fourth, Servite had three RBIs on consecutive hits by Rolish, Rosenkranz and Cory Wentz, to take a 3-1 lead.

Bishop Montgomery (2-4 in league) took the lead in the second inning on a ground out by Rudy Garbalosa. In the fifth, the Lancers had four runs on three hits including a two-run error by third baseman Doug Beuerlein with the bases loaded.

With the Friars down 6-3, Samford (1-2) relieved starting pitcher Jeff Larson in the seventh inning and was credited with the win for Servite.

In other Angelus League action:

Mater Dei 12, St. Paul 3--Senior pitcher Jon Hulshof kept Mater Dei’s undefeated record intact with a 12-3 victory over St. Paul at Mater Dei.

Mater Dei was led by Anthony Follico, who was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. He hit a two-run double in the second inning and added a solo run in the fifth.

Monarch Rich Albert was 1 for 3 with a two-run homer in the third. Bobby DeJardin was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and Mike Kelly was 2 for 2 with two runs scored.

In the Anaheim Lions Easter Tournament:

Canyon 13, Woodbridge 4--Leonard Damian powered the Comanches to the consolation championship with two home runs against Woodbridge. On Monday, Damian threw a no-hitter against Kennedy. Tuesday, as designated hitter, Damian hit a two-run homer in the third inning and a solo shot in the fifth to lead the rout. Damian was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Jeff Bacon had two RBIs for Woodbridge.

In the Santa Ana Elks Tournament:

Millikan 8, Katella 0-- Mike Burns struck out four and gave up four hits in Millikan’s 8-0 victory over Katella in the championship game of the Santa Ana Elks Tournament.

Irvine 6, Mission Viejo 2--Mike Hennigan pitched a four-hitter to lead the Vaqueros to the upset over the Diablos in the fifth-place game. Jeff Walters went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Jim Murphy went 2 for 4 with a double. Irvine raised its record to 10-6 while Mission Viejo fell to 9-3.

Santa Ana 6, El Toro 4--John Schilling had a double and a single and drove in three runs to lead the Saints to the consolation championship. Schilling finished with nine RBIs and nine hits in the tournament. Schilling also was the winning pitcher against the Chargers, improving his record to 5-0.

Corona 10, Foothill 6--The Knights simply could not get the hits it needed as Corona defeated Foothill, 10-6, for third place in the Santa Ana Elks Tournament. Doug Kopcha had two hits for the Knights.

Millikan 15, Corona 12--The game, which was called because of darkness Monday, resumed at 10 a.m. Tuesday with Millikan and Corona in a 12-12 tie in the seventh inning. In the top of the eighth inning, Millikan had three runs to take the lead and the victory over Corona, 15-12. The win advanced Millikan to the championship against Katella.

In the Pomona Elks Tournament:

Edgewood 4, Ocean View 1--Three Seahawk errors in the first three innings proved to be Ocean View’s undoing as it lost to Edgewood, 4-1, in the third round of the Pomona Elks Tournament in Pomona. In the fourth inning, Phillip Chess scored the Seahawks’ run on a sacrifice fly to left field.
