Ireland to Extradite Man for Trial in U.S.
DUBLIN, Ireland — An Irish court Tuesday ordered a 49-year-old American extradited to the United States to stand trial on a charge of killing his wife in 1967 with a poisoned cocktail.
Joseph Maloney is to be extradited to Rochester, N.Y., where he was indicted for the murder of his wife, June, at their son’s 5th birthday party 18 years ago. He escaped soon afterward.
He has 15 days in which to lodge an appeal, during which he is being held without bail.
Maloney, who has maiontained his name is Michael O’Shea, was identified in court Tuesday by retired Rochester police detective George Reis, a former neighbor.
Last week, an Irish police officer told the court he had identified Maloney by his fingerprints from U.S. files in 1973 but had been unable to detain him until an extradition pact between the two countries came into force last December.
