Gretzky Collects His 200th Point

Defenseman Paul Coffey scored three goals and Wayne Gretzky reached the 200-point mark for the season with his 425th career goal Sunday as the Oilers topped the Black Hawks at Chicago.

Coffey, one of the National Hockey League’s premier defensemen, scored all three goals in the third period, when the Oilers scored five goals to break a 2-2 tie. He now has 36 goals for the year.

The loss was only the sixth in the last 19 games for the 36-35-6 Black Hawks, who remained two points behind the Norris Division-leading St. Louis Blues, who were idle. Edmonton (48-19-10) has already clinched the Smythe Division championship.

Gretzky scored one goal--his 69th--and had four assists to reach 200 points for the third time in his six seasons in the NHL.

Calgary 4, Winnipeg 4--Scott Arniel sent the game into overtime with a goal at 12:49 of the third period in a game at Winnipeg as the Jets set a team-record with an 11-game unbeaten streak.

They had won nine in a row before tying their last two games.

Calgary outshot Winnipeg, 4-0, in overtime, but was unable to score.

Brian Mullen’s 30th goal of the season which gave Winnipeg a 3-1 lead, also made the Jets only the third team in NHL history to have six 30-goal scorers in a single season.

The others were Buffalo (1974-75) and the New York Islanders (1977-78).

Montreal 4, Pittsburgh 2--The Canadiens won for the four straight time and, coupled with Quebec’s loss, claimed sole possession in the Adams Division with the victory at Pittsburgh.

Mats Naslund, Chris Chelios and former Penguin Ron Flockhart scored first-period goals for Montreal, which has 89 points, two ahead of the Nordiques and three on the Sabres.

The loss, along with the New York Rangers’ win over Toronto, puts Pittsburgh seven points behind New York in the race for the Patrick Division’s fourth and final playoff spot. The Penguins, who have lost six of their last seven, have just four games remaining.

N.Y. Rangers 7, Toronto 5--Mike Rogers scored two goals, including the 200th of his NHL career, and set up two others as the Rangers won at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Toronto, which has the worst record in the NHL at 20-49-8, moved out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Borje Salming and Rick Vaive in the first 3:46. But the Rangers roared back to score the next seven goals, five of which came in the first period.

They led, 7-2, in the second period before the Maple Leafs made it interesting, getting goals from John Anderson and Bill Derlago in the second and Jeff Brubaker in the third against New York goalie Glen Hanlon.

It was Hanlon’s 50th victory as a Ranger, although the five goals allowed pushed their goals-against to 336, their worst ever in a single season.

Vancouver 3, Minnesota 2--Rookie Petri Skriko snapped a 2-2 tie at 5:54 of the third period to give the Canucks, who overcame a two-goal deficit, the win at Vancouver.

Skriko, who is sixth in scoring among NHL rookies, took a backhand pass from Gary Lupul and beat Minnesota goaltender Don Beaupre from a sharp angle. Veterans Stan Smyl and Peter McNab also scored for the Canucks, who ended a three-game winless streak.

The North Stars lost their fifth consecutive road game, and, for the second time in as many nights by a 3-2 score. The lost Saturday night to the Kings by the same score.

Buffalo 3, Quebec 1--Gilles Hamel scored what proved to be the winning goal and Buffalo got two more goals on the power play to win in an Adams Division game at Buffalo.

The victory moved the Sabres within one point of Quebec, which entered the game tied with Montreal for the Adams Division lead with 87 points.

The Sabres, aided by a solid performance by goalie Tom Barrasso on his 20th birthday, also got goals from Sean McKenna and Gil Perreault. Peter Stastny scored for the Nordiques.
