Film Editor Hal C. Kern Dies at 90

Hal C. Kern, a film editor who worked on “Gone With the Wind” and many other major motion pictures during a 50-year Hollywood career that began in the era of silent films, died Monday in Los Angeles at age 90.

Kern, who was supervising film editor for producer David O. Selznick for 16 years, was a co-winner of an Oscar for the editing on “Gone With the Wind” in 1939 and was nominated for “Rebecca” in 1940 and “Since You Went Away” in 1944.

He edited many of the top films of the 1930s and 1940s, including “A Star Is Born,” “The Prisoner of Zenda,” “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” “Intermezzo,” Spellbound” and “The Paradine Case.”

He is survived by his wife, Eileen Kern, and two children.
