Flooding eased in some areas of the Midwest and Northeast after chasing scores of people from their homes, and agencies began adding up the millions of dollars in damage. Flooding caused by heavy rain last week and warm weekend temperatures that melted snow claimed four lives in three states. High water that threatened Fort Wayne, Ind., abated as the city’s three rivers receded, and other northern Indiana communities also won reprieves from the dangers of spring flooding. In Michigan, an official said it appeared to be improving throughout the state.
