O’Mara Seeks Repeat at Anaheim

Johnny O’Mara, who started his drive to the 1984 Supercross championship by winning at Anaheim Stadium, will return to the scene Saturday night, already in the lead for 1985.

O’Mara, riding a Team Honda 250cc motocross bike, won the opener last Saturday night before 35,967 fans at San Diego by finishing second in both 12-minute motos. Two El Cajon riders, Broc Glover and Rick Johnson, were the heat winners, but O’Mara got the overall win because he beat Glover for second place in the second--and most important--heat.

If two riders tie in points, as O’Mara (2-2) and Glover (1-3) did, the issue is determined by the result of the second heat.

A record crowd of 70,203 watched O’Mara win at Anaheim last year, and advance ticket sales indicate that Saturday night’s show may draw another packed house.

“I hope the track isn’t as tough as last year,” O’Mara said. “With four laps to go, I got stomach cramps and I didn’t know if I could make it. I thought I was going to be sick.”

Besides the second event of the AMA-sanctioned 250cc Supercross series, there will be competition for 125cc riders.

OFF ROAD RACING--One of the most popular desert races of the year, the Parker 400, will be run Saturday along the Colorado River--part in California and part in Arizona. The Parker race is No. 1 in a series of eight races sponsored jointly by SCORE and High Desert Racing Assn. More than 300 vehicles are expected to start.

STOCK CARS--The $100,000 Skoal Bandit Copper World Classic at Phoenix International Raceway, which also includes sprint cars, midgets and supermodified roadsters, has been postponed from this weekend to Feb. 22-23 because of flooding in the track area.

SPORTS CARS--The International Motor Sports Assn.’s 18-event schedule will get under way Saturday with 98 cars entered in the Sun Bank 24-hour endurance race at Daytona International Speedway. The entry includes 40 prototype Camel GT cars, headed by the Porsche 962 of defending champion Al Holbert, Derek Bell and Al Unser Jr. The Camel GT series will come to Riverside on April 28 with the Times-Nissan Grand Prix of Endurance.
