San Diego Prep Basketball : Chula Turns On Power to Run Over Coronado, 71-31
SAN DIEGO — No. 10 Chula Vista tightened its grip on first place in the Metro South Bay League with a 71-31 win over Coronado Wednesday night at Coronado High School.
The Spartans opened up an 8-2 lead early in the game, but the Islanders came back to go ahead, 12-10, at the end of the first quarter.
Halftime saw Chula Vista leading, 25-18, but in the third period, the Spartans outscored Coronado, 19-2, turning the game into a rout.
“I thought we played a good first half,” said Coronado Coach Doug Broback. “But we just made too many mistakes in the second period and let the game get away from us.”
Chula Vista (8-0, 19-2), was led by Bay Dean, who scored 26 points. Edgar Harvey had 13 and Darell Woods, 14.
Bill Ward paced Coronado (0-8, 2-12) with 16.
In other Metro South Bay League games:
Southwest 73, Marian 58--Three Raiders combined to score 62 of the team’s 73 points. Alvin Bagos led Southwest (4-4, 5-11) with 22. Dean Riggs and David Reiff had 21 and 19, respectively. Bagos also had 11 rebounds. Clem Aslip led the Crusaders (2-6, 4-12) with 16.
In Palomar League games:
Mt.Carmel 85, Orange Glen 52--The Sundevils (5-4, 9-10) broke the .500 barrier in league play, thanks to Scott Boggins’ 22 points. Jim Tejeck added 13 points and Edgar Camerino, 11.
Kory Kelly led the Patriots (2-6, 5-9) with 16 points.
Poway 92, San Dieguito 50--The No. 1 Titans extended their league record to eight games without a loss with the win over the Mustangs. Poway’s Dominic Johnson led all scorers with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate John Colborne had 18 points and 12 rebounds. Andy Byrne had 16, and Jud Buchler, 13. The Mustangs were led by Dan Henderson with 12 and Rick McCarthy and Rob Haskell with 11 each.
Vista 52, Torrey Pines 51-A pair of free throws by Chris Hayes with a minute left lifted the Panthers (4-4, 9-10) over the Falcons. Vista’s high scorer was Ron Howard with 26. Torrey Pines got 19 points from Dave Jenny and 16 from Scott Kennedy.
In an Avocado League game:
San Pasqual 75, Ramona 47--The Golden Eagles (4-4, 11-9) used a balanced attack to beat the Bulldogs. Rich Prusinski led the way with 15 points, and Jeff Baglio and Tom Noonan added 11 each. John Monetta was the leading scorer for Ramona with 12.
In a Metro Mesa League game:
Sweetwater 92, Castle Park 65--The No. 3 Red Devils won their 47th consecutive league game in coasting to the win over the Trojans. Matt Simmons had 22 points to lead Sweetwater (8-0, 19-2). Carlos Siragusa had 20, Larry Willson, 19, and Mahlon Williams, 16. Castle Park (3-5, 8-10) was led by Johnny Stanton, with 16 points, and Kip Korzep, 15.
