In a View story Oct. 29, The Times incorrectly described Victor M. Carter, recipient of United Way’s inaugural Humanitarian Award, as the originator of Builders Emporium. Although Carter built Builders Emporium into a leading self-serve retail operation, he purchased the Van Nuys lumber and hardware store in 1949 from Si Bercutt, the first owner of the store.
