Rafael Hernandez Colon was sworn in as governor of Puerto Rico, returning to office after eight years. He promised to improve Puerto Rico’s relations with Washington and abandon his past efforts to win more autonomy for the U.S. commonwealth. Hernandez Colon, a Democrat, said in his inaugural address that he will make no efforts to alter the island’s status during the next four years, a status that allows it to be largely self-governing while its people can be eligible for food stamps and other U.S. federal benefits.
