Donald W. Brooks has been named president and chief executive of Mountain View, Calif.-based Fairchild Camera & Instrument Corp., and executive vice president of Schlumberger Ltd., Fairchild’s New York-based corporate parent.

Brooks, who has been executive vice president of Fairchild’s North America semiconductor group since May, 1983, succeeds Thomas C. Roberts.

The company said Roberts is taking a leave of absence to “pursue personal business.” It did not elaborate except to say that his future position at Fairchild has not yet been disclosed.

Roberts was named president of Fairchild at the time it was acquired by Schlumberger in November, 1979. He has worked for Schlumberger for 15 years.
