Tavrion Dawson, a 6-foot-7 senior, was named the co-MVP of the St. John Bosco tournament after helping Gardena Serra defeat Orange Lutheran, 76-74, in the championship game. Brian Beard of Orange Lutheran also earned co-MVP honors.
Serra’s performance ought to ease any fears among fans that the Cavaliers might drop off after losing guards Ajon Efferson and Ellis Salahuddin, both of whom transferred.
Ron Freeman, a 6-5 senior, made major contributions, as did sophomore guard Lafayette Dorsey, up from JVs. It was Dorsey’s two free throws with less than two seconds left the provided the game-winning points.
