Football: Santa Margarita shows it learns a lesson in openness

It’s not easy breaking bad news, and Santa Margarita has had plenty in recent years.
The Eagles have been criticized for their lack of transparency, and rightfully so. The school didn’t inform parents about criminal convictions involving two assistant coaches until after last season. The school went to court the year before to block disclosure of punishment against Coach Harry Welch for a rules violation.
But on Saturday afternoon, the football program sent out an email news release announcing that quarterback Johnny Stanton would undergo surgery because of an ACL injury.
It was stunning news, and even more stunning is that someone made the decision not to hide the information until Monday, knowing it would probably leak out before then.
By being upfront, the school has given everyone a chance to come to terms with a difficult situation and try to help each other heal and move forward together.
What a great concept.
Somebody has learned a lesson at Santa Margarita. Good for the Eagles.
