Baseball: Lucas Giolito hits 100 mph, throws one-hitter

The baseball season is only in its second week, and pitcher Lucas Giolito of Harvard-Westlake (3-0) has already hit a milestone. He was clocked throwing a couple of 100 mph fastballs and finished with a one-hitter on Tuesday in the Wolverines’ 11-0 victory over Woodland Hills El Camino Real in a quarterfinal game of the Easton tournament.
He held El Camino Real hitless for 6 1/3 innings, finishing with eight strikeouts and zero walks while throwing 81 pitches. Mason Novak got the only hit for El Camino Real. Giolito’s next outing will be Tuesday in a Mission League opener against Alemany at home. Max Fried went three for three and Joe Corrigan and Alex Horowitz had two hits apiece.
Alemany (3-0) defeated Newbury Park, 10-3. Corey Sims had three hits and Peter Van Gansen, Ryan Paramo and Cory Messmore added two apiece. Paramo allowed two unearned runs in six innings. West Ranch and Loyola tied, 3-3, but West Ranch advances on hits. Casey Gahan and Justin Hovis had two hits apiece. Valencia defeated Chaminade, 8-4. AJ Balta went four for four. Conner Chase threw five shutout innings.
The semifinals will match Harvard-Westlake against West Ranch and Alemany against Valencia in a matchup of Mission League teams against Foothill League games.
Oaks Christian defeated Calabasas, 6-2. Phil Bickford struck out eight and walked none. Nate Palace had two hits and three RBIs. Granada Hills Kennedy defeated Quartz Hill, 7-3, with Alex Gomez getting three hits and two RBIs. Rio Mesa defeated Burbank, 9-3. Luke Persico and Baggio Saldivar each tripled in Hart’s 9-4 win over St. Francis. Chatsworth and Westlake finished in a 1-1 tie.
Redlands East Valley improved to 3-0 with a 2-0 win over Beaumont. Kevin Stevens threw five innings of no-hit ball, giving him nine innings of no-hit ball and 17 strikeouts in two games. He combined for his second no-hitter in three games. REV will host Riverside North (3-0) on Thursday.
Riverside North defeated Granite Hills, 10-7. Gabrial Franca, Gabriel Clark and Justin Gheorghe had two hits apiece. Agoura defeated Santa Monica, 6-4. Albee Weiss hit a bases loaded triple in seventh for Agoura (2-0-1). Santa Barbara defeated Arroyo Grande, 9-3. Jason Jimenez hit a grand slam in the fifth inning. Kenny Crawford allowed one run in six innings.
Crespi defeated Thousand Oaks, 7-2, with Andy Frakes and Daniel Avalos getting two hits apiece.
