Max Hooper converted three three-point shots in the third quarter to provide an offensive spark for Santa Ana Mater Dei, which leads Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, 59-51, in the Nike Extravaganza.
The pace picked up in the third quarter. Less fouls and more fast breaks. Mater Dei twice built leads of nine points, then Hooper’s three-pointer gave the Monarchs a 55-44 advantage with less than three minutes left in the quarter.
But the Gaels have stubbornly refused to go down quietly. Keala King has 19 points and Tyler Lamb 18 for Mater Dei.
