Boys’ basketball: Can anyone topple Mater Dei?

This may be a bold statement, but here it goes -- Mater Dei is the best team in Southern California. Thanks to its 15-0 record and three tournament titles, I think it’s safe to say the Monarchs and their five Division I-bound starters are on their way to becoming one of the greatest teams in SoCal history.
Still, I’d like to think that the Monarchs don’t have to travel to exotic locales like Fort Myers, Fla. in order to play a competitive game. Mater Dei may be the top team in the nation and the heavy favorite for the CIF State Division I-AA title, but there are plenty of teams out there who could potentially knock the Monarchs off their basketball throne.
They could meet up with King, Etiwanda or Dominguez in the playoffs and a Southern California Regional final against Westchester, Fairfax or Taft isn’t of the question, either. Unfortunately, we won’t see Mater Dei play either Bishop Montgomery or Leuzinger this season.
