The most impressive victory of Week 8?

Not Newport Harbor’s 31-27 victory over Los Alamitos, though it’s a great victory. Scoring in the final minute on J.B. Green’s five-yard run was clutch. The Sailors have knocked off a couple of Division I veterans in back-to-back seasons since joining the Sunset League. Last year it was Esperanza.

Not Edison’s 9-7 victory over previously unbeaten Esperanza, though it’s a crucial victory. The game could have gone either way between these two OC heavyweights, but it the Chargers remained standing.

But Tustin’s 35-27 victory over Anaheim Canyon came out of nowhere. The Tillers figured to be fourth place in the Century League, at best, with a playoff spot representing a good year. Now, the playoff spot is a near certainty if it can win only one more game against either El Dorado or Brea Olinda. The points? Sophomore Anthony Wilkerson, who Coach Myron Miller expects to emerge as one of the premier running backs in Orange County over the next two years, rushed for 283 yards and five touchdowns.

The defense wasn’t bad either, as it held Josh Hawkins to only 22 yards rushing; he had averaged 174.6 yards a game.
