Camarillo’s quarterback fills in nicely

No one said that things were going to be easy for Marcus Sanchez when he was annointed Camarillo‘s starting quarterback over the summer. He was replacing Samson Szakacsy, one of the more highly-touted prospects in Ventura County a season ago, who verbally committed to USC before changing his mind and heading to Arizona State.

Sanchez, a senior, is forging his own identity. Completing more than 62% of his passes and throwing for more than 300 yards in three of his last five games will do wonders. Take a look at his stats on MaxPreps.com, the numbers speak for themselves as the Scorpions (6-2 overall) prepare for Friday’s showdown against host Oxnard (6-2) in a game that will likely decide the Pacific View League title.

I can already hear the chants of ‘Samson who?’ coming from the Camarillo faithful. Make no mistake, it’s not my intent to put any added pressure on Sanchez, or any high school player, for that matter. Then again, he’s handled the so-called pressure pretty well to this point. Who knows, when all is said and done, Sanchez may be held in the same regard as his predecessor.
