USC freshman receiver De’Von Flournoy is making a bid for playing time during the season after two impressive scrimmage performances.
Flournoy turned a mid-range reception into an electrifying 53-yard touchdown on Monday night at the Coliseum, shaking several would-be tacklers on a zigzag route to the end zone.
‘He’s running the wrong way, going backward, and the coaches are going, ‘No, no, no, no!’ ‘ Coach Pete Carroll said. ‘And all of a sudden, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!’ He turned it around and made a big play of it.’
Flournoy has caught six passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns in two scrimmages.
Juniors Damian Williams, Ronald Johnson and David Ausberry are the top three receivers, but Flournoy could work himself into the rotation if he can handle the information overload that often overwhelms young Trojan receivers once the season begins.
