Off Cabo San Lucas, the marlin catch is high, and troubling

OK, we’ve had enough ice-related posts for a while. Let’s switch to the liquid version, but a serious subject. The Times’ Pete Thomas in his Outposts blog today takes on the anglers who are going after striped marlin off Cabo San Lucas. More than 7,000 reportedly have been caught this season by the Pisces Sportsfishing fleet alone. But as Pete writes:
There’s a troubling trend off Land’s End. Crews aboard the top boats have been aggressively trying to out-perform one another, catching and releasing marlin as fast as they can, striving to make theirs the high boat for a given day. Captains too. The more marlin flags they fly, the bigger their reputations become.
