Sometimes they’re line drives, sometimes they’re little dribblers and sometimes they glance off gloves.
They all count as hits, and Andre Ethier will take them however they come. And right now, they just keep on coming.
Ethier extended his career-high hitting streak Sunday against San Diego at Dodger Stadium, bouncing a ball just inside the first-base line in the seventh inning. Padres first baseman Brad Hawpe, who usually plays in the outfield, dived for the ball, but it glanced off his glove and he had no chance to make a play as Ethier raced to the bag.
The infield single made it 27 consecutive games with at least one hit for Ethier, the second-longest streak in Los Angeles Dodgers history. Willie Davis holds the franchise record of 31 games.
The longest hitting streak for a player from the franchise’s Brooklyn era is Zack Wheat’s 29-game stretch in 1916. Ethier is tied with Duke Snider and Ducky Medwick for the third-longest hitting streak in the Dodgers’ 122-year history.
The last player in the majors to put together a 27-game hitting streak was Seattle’s Ichiro Suzuki in 2009.
