Food events: Oktoberfest, stopping violence, curing breast cancer

Oom-pah! The biggest Oktoberfest in Southern California begins Friday at the Alpine Village, just off the 110 Freeway in Torrance. You’ll find bands, bratwurst and even beer flown in from Germany. It runs through Oct. 23. According to organizers, last year more than 70,000 people came over the seven weekends. Festivities run from 6 p.m. to midnight Fridays and Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.

Cook for Love: ‘Top Chef’ stars Stefan Richter and Danielle Keene and ‘Hell’s Kitchen’s’ Gloria Felix will be cooking to benefit Break the Cycle, a national organization devoted to stopping teen dating violence Oct. 9 in West Hollywood.
Cooking for Love, 1041 N. Formosa Ave., West Hollywood. Tickets range from $100 to $450.
Cook for Music: Jan Weimer, a much-loved Los Angeles cookbook writer and Bon Appetit contributor, will be memorialized at a pair of fundraising concerts in November that will raise money for breast cancer research. The Camerata Pacifica will perform Nov. 17 at the Zipper Auditorium. On Nov. 19, Levin, former concert mistress of the Kennedy Center Opera Orchestra, and Riko will perform at the Chislehurst Recital and Buffet Hall in Los Feliz. Tickets are $150, or $250 for both events. In addition the Camerata Pacific will donate half of all season-ticket proceeds and Capricorn Coffee of San Francisco is donating a percentage of sales from its Jan Weimer Blend.
