What’s in the box at Father’s Office?

If you’ve been to Father’s Office recently and noticed small cardboard boxes showing up at nearby tables and have wondered what’s in them, they’re cupcakes. Yes, F.O. owner Sang Yoon makes cupcakes. Or his pastry chef John Park does.
Until now, Father’s Office didn’t offer desserts, sometimes notoriously, because it also doesn’t allow outside desserts to be brought in, such as a cake for a birthday. So now you can celebrate with cupcakes. Or ice cream sandwiches.
The cupcake is a moist, dark-chocolate-y cake topped with Old Rasputin Imperial Stout frosting and peanuts. And there are two ice cream sandwiches. One is foie gras hazelnut ice cream with oatmeal raisin cookies. The other is buttermilk ice cream and blackberry sorbet between lemon shortbread cookies.
All the desserts are meant to be hand-held, says Yoon. ‘Nothing plated. So people can walk around with them’ -- if that’s how you like to eat your desserts.
Also look for beer floats -- ice creams and sorbets paired to specific beers, called ‘a la mode.’ There will be a seasonally rotating selection. For example, the very hoppy Sculpin IPA can be ordered ‘a la mode’ with grapefruit sorbet. Just don’t try sticking a candle in it.
Available at the Culver City location of Father’s Office (3229 Helms Ave.), and soon at the Santa Monica location (1018 Montana Ave.).
