Five theater productions, four dance groups, two art exhibitions and six new-music ensembles are headed to REDCAT at the Walt Disney Concert Hall for the fall 2009 season, the performance art space announced today.
In addition, REDCAT said that the Wooster Group will return in February with a revival of ‘North Atlantic,’ featuring members of the Wooster ensemble plus actress Frances McDormand. (The Wooster Group will appear Feb. 10-21, 2010.)
For the theatrical slate, the season includes Belarus Free Theatre’s ‘Discover Love’ (Oct. 1-3), based on the lives of Soviet dissidents Irina and Anatoly Krasovskaya; Pieter-Dirk Uys’ one-man show ‘Elections and Erections’ (Oct. 9), a comic take on South African socialite Evita Bezuidenhout’s political aspirations; Cloud Eye Control’s ‘Under Polaris’ (Oct. 14-17), an abstract, arctic-themed performance piece; and Joey Arias and Basil Twist’s ‘Arias With a Twist’ (Nov. 18 - Dec. 13), which features a drag act and puppetry.
There will also be REDCAT’s ongoing Studio series (Nov. 1-2), featuring an eclectic mix of experimental Los Angeles artists.
For the dance lineup, the season will feature Meg Stuart and Philipp Gehmacher (Sept. 23-26), presenting numbers scored to a quasi-blues song suite by Niko Hafkenscheid; Gregory Maqoma and the Vuyani Dance Theatre (Oct. 21-25), performing African-inspired dances set to live music; Anna Halprin and Anne Collod in ‘parades & changes, replays’ (Nov. 11-14), a reconstruction of Halprin’s 1965 work of the same name; and a CalArts Winter Dance showcase (Dec. 18-19) that features new works by three faculty members.
REDCAT’s new-music schedule will include ‘AH!’ (Sept. 16-18), a Buddhist-inspired performance; Mexican pianist Ana Cervantes’ ‘Rumor de Páramo’ (Sept. 30); an evening celebrating folk singer Linda Perhacs and the L.A. web-radio collective dublab (Oct. 7); the California E.A.R. Unit’s ‘The Lindas’ (Oct. 10), a performance of work by composers whose first names are ‘Linda’; a performance by the New York-based Claudia Quintet (Oct. 28); and a Balinese adaptation of the Indian epic ‘Ramayana’ (Nov. 6-8)
There will be two gallery exhibitions for the fall season: a solo show by Abraham Cruzvillegas (Sept. 12-Nov. 8) that will explore the Ajusco district in the south of Mexico City; and ‘Everyday Miracles (Extended),’ a group show featuring contemporary artists from Asia.
Among the highlights of the upcoming film and video program are new and recent work by Ken Jacobs, Bruce McClure and Sun Xun. There will also be a screening of ‘Flaming Creatures’ by Jack Smith, followed by a discussion with Village Voice film critic J. Hoberman.
