The cast of ‘Modern Family’ walked through the backstage corridors of the Shrine with the breezy, loose-limbed cheer of an ensemble that truly enjoys one another’s company.
The vocal leader is the boisterous Sofia Vergara, who in her excitement is loud, proud and doting on her cast mates. ‘You want to know something about Ed? He is a very, very, VERY good ... cook,’ she said with vamping tones. Ed O’Neill standing next to her began to laugh and nod with approval as she sang the praises of his carb-heaven rigatoni.
A few moments later a television reporter tried to butt in on the ensemble’s patter but Vergara would have none of it. ‘I’m Colombian, you have too much to lose,’ she warned the interloper.
Meanwhile, over her shoulder, the kids in the cast giggled and beamed and shared their own self-contained circle of humor. Young Nolan Gould took the seaweed-colored statuette he had just won and curled it like a dumbbell. He borrowed the trophy from his on-screen sister and tried to heft both at once, but alarm crossed his face. ‘Aggghhh ... too much, too much.’ And then the whole group was off, a mini-tribe enjoying the jokes even when the audience was only one another.
