Fog grounds planes at Huntington Beach air show practice

A heavy marine layer that hung over Huntington Beach on Friday afternoon left the Navy’s Blue Angels and the Canadian Snowbirds unable to take flight for scheduled practice runs.

The Breitling Huntington Beach Airshow was expected to get underway Friday with a practice exhibition, but poor visibility left hundreds of spectators without a show.

Air show director Mike McCabe said the weather conditions made it unsafe for the performers to fly.

“Safety is and will always remain our first priority,” he said. “No one is more disappointed about the weather than our performers.”

The air show will run from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday just south of the Huntington Beach Pier. A festival including aerospace exhibits and a flight simulator will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Pier Plaza.

General admission is free. Tickets are available for $199 for the Aviator Beach Club, which features a bungalow tent, premium seating, lunch and beverages.

People who purchased $139 VIP tickets for Friday will not get a refund, according to McCabe.

“It’s always been a rain-or-shine event,” he said.
