Alex Crane is a Brooklyn-based clothing brand that wants you to lighten your load. Literally. Their company mentality (more on that in a bit) and the fabrics they use are all carefully chosen to make you feel cool and light.
Disclosure: Alex Crane sent a sample of their Campo Sweater in Tank color to review.
In some photos it may seem overly gray in color, but in person, it’s a nice blend between stone and army green. The green is subtle; you know it's there, but it doesn't stand out one way or another. If you prefer a more neutral color, it's also available in charcoal gray. As well, Alex Crane offers this sweater in women’s sizes. There are a few things that set this sweater apart from the competition: manufacturing and care.
This particular 100% Italian merino wool sweater is 3D-knitted, which is a game-changer. It reduces textile waste by cutting down the amount of material used while creating a sweater that lasts longer with fewer seams and a stronger weave. It’s made right here in the United States, supporting an American company. Another benefit is that it's very easy to wash, especially compared to regular merino wool sweaters. Instead of needing to place it on a drying rack or towel to dry, the Alex Crane Campo sweater can be thrown in the dryer. If that makes you uncomfortable, a drying rack works just as well.
As for Alex Crane's company mentality: their mantra is that they "make breezy clothes". This sweater does indeed feel cool and light. Its lack of weight makes it a perfect addition to a button-down shirt, but the sweater can also be worn on its own, even in springtime sun. Because it’s merino wool, it is naturally odor-resistant and thermoregulating. It has a good amount of stretch to it, so it never feels stiff or restrictive.
Paired with some chino pants or slacks and a button-down shirt, it easily morphs from a casual all-day top to a business attire accessory. In short, it's an easy-to-care-for merino sweater that somehow works perfectly all-year around. As an added bonus, it's proudly made in the USA. Now that it’s springtime, Alex Crane's Campo Sweater is a perfect reflection of the season.
