Gone are the days of wearing stiff denim, cotton, and other unforgiving fabrics day in and day out — leggings have taken the world by storm, giving women a comfier yet equally stylish and versatile alternative to casual wear. From intense workouts like lifting and cardio to running errands and lounging at home, leggings have become a go-to staple in every woman's wardrobe. They're not just cozy; they're also stretchy and flattering, and they can be dressed up or down, making them an excellent choice for various occasions.

On the reverse side of the coin, not all leggings are created equal. Many types are known to pill between the thighs, have unsightly seams, reveal underwear lines, have a waistband that folds on itself, or are too see-through for squatting at the gym. And with all the leggings brands out there claiming to be the best, how do you know how to find the best supportive leggings and which ones really deliver on their promises?

Bestcovery has tested a handful of popular leggings brands to help you find the best athleisure for your needs. Whether you're a gym junkie or just looking for something stylish and comfortable to wear, our list of the best women's leggings of 2023 will help you find the perfect pair.

Top Choices for Women’s Leggings

Salutation Stash Leggings 2

Athleta Salutation Stash Tight - Best Overall

The Athleta Salutation Stash leggings are the highest-rated leggings on our list. They fit true to size and maintain their shape well, even after hours of wear. The flattering back panel sculpts the backside beautifully, which gives an extra boost of confidence at the gym. These leggings provide stomach and leg compression while still being stretchy. The soft, breathable, and moisture-wicking material makes the Athleta Salutation Stash leggings perfect for all kinds of activities, from yoga to HIIT workouts. I also love the deep pockets on both sides, making it easy to carry phones, keys, and small wallets without fear of losing them.

  • Compressing and flattering while remaining stretchy
  • Deep pockets to securely store essentials
  • Flattering back panel
  • Waistband may roll down during intense workouts
  • They attract lint and dog hair easily
  • Potentially too high-waisted for people with shorter torsos

While they do have the highest price tag of the leggings on our list, they're worth the cost! These high-quality leggings are incredibly durable, and I feel they'll last for many years through several workouts. We didn't notice any pilling or decreased quality, even after several washes.

If you want to feel confident and comfortable during workouts, lounging, and running errands, grab yourself a pair of the Athleta Salutation leggings. I seriously can't recommend them enough!

Length: 25", 23", and 28" inseams

Lululemon Align High-Rise Pant 25" - Runner Up

The Lululemon Align High-Rise is the runner-up on our list because I love the fit and feel. These leggings fit perfectly and are comfortable for many activities, like running and squats. I also had no issues with the band falling or rolling during workouts. The material is incredibly comfortable, and it sometimes felt like we weren't even wearing pants. While this lightweight feeling is great for breathability during workouts, I didn't love that feeling when I wore them for lounging or running errands. The Align High-Rise leggings are very flexible and breathable, making them great for intense workouts or outdoor activities in the heat.

  • Very breathable material
  • Lightweight feeling, which is great during workouts
  • The band stays put during all sorts of movement
  • Thinner material is uncomfortable for casual wear
  • Pilling occurred quickly on the inner thighs
  • The material feels less durable than other brands

The reason these leggings didn't win first place is that I felt like the material isn't as durable and may wear out sooner than the Athleta Salutation leggings. Several of us also noticed pilling on the inner thighs after minimal movement and washing. Another slight drawback is the lack of external pockets.

Aerie Offline Real Me Leggings, front view

Aerie Offline Real Me High Waisted Crossover Legging - Budget Friendly

Overall, I like the Aerie Offline Real Me leggings but feel they are lacking in many areas. These leggings are comfortable, flexible, and great for lighter activities and casual wear. They have a crossover waist that's a cute and trendy design but makes the leggings less supportive than other brands. The lack of support makes them unsuitable for high-intensity workouts, weightlifting, and running. The soft and lightweight material is very comfortable for walking, running errands, and yoga. However, the thin fabric doesn't hide problem areas very well. Ultimately, these are a great option on a budget and perfect for lounging and running errands.

  • Cute and trendy crossover band
  • Perfect for lounging
  • Budget-friendly
  • Lacks support
  • Doesn't hide problem areas
  • Not suitable for high-intensity workouts

Fabric: Nylon and elastane
Style: High-waisted with a crossover band
Performance: Great for light workouts, errands, and day trips
Colors and sizes: 6 colors, XXS - XXL

Fabletics Anywhere Motion365 High-Waisted Legging - Most Colorful

The Fabletics Anywhere leggings have a flattering and slimming fit. I love that the material stays in place and doesn't fall during activities. The high waistband is also very comfortable and provides a sense of structure and support around the waist. The material is high-quality, but it feels very thin, which isn't pleasant during intense workouts or long walks.

  • Supportive waistband
  • High-quality materials
  • There is a zipper pocket in the back
  • Thin material
  • Only one neutral color option
  • Not ideal for long walks or intense workouts

The back zipper pocket is a nice touch because we can securely store wallets and phones while exercising. I also thought black was a nice color, but this and a light gray are the only neutral colors available. The other options are more colorful patterns and designs, which aren't ideal for all wearers.

Performance: Light to medium activities

Length: short, regular, tall

Fabletics Oasis PureLuxe High-Waisted Legging - Good Compression

Ultimately, I felt like the Fabletics Oasis leggings were good but not great compared to the other leggings I tried. They have good compression and an excellent slimming effect but offer less support than we were looking for. They felt secure for the most part, but I did have some issues with the waistband rolling down during certain activities. These leggings are also less flattering on the backside compared to other brands. I did love the fabric, though, because it's very silky and soft, which feels really nice against the skin.

  • Soft, silky material
  • Slimming effect
  • Good compression
  • Lacks support
  • Not very flattering on the backside
  • The waistband rolls down quickly with minimal movement

Buyer's Guide

How We Compared Leggings

There are dozens of factors to take into consideration when picking a pair of leggings for your specific purposes, but we ultimately narrowed it down to the most important ones — the feel, comfort and fit, opacity, and performance. Here’s what we looked for when reviewing the best women's leggings of 2023.

Quality and Feel of the Fabric

In this category, we considered the quality and feel of the fabric used for each pair of leggings. We looked at factors such as softness, stretchiness, durability, and breathability, considering whether or not the material was easy to wash and care for and was cozy enough for daily wear and lounging.

Opacity

Nobody wants to experience a wardrobe malfunction in public. That's why many women are in pursuit of the best leggings that aren't see-through. We reviewed brands that claimed they weren't see-through to put them to the test.

General Fit and Comfort

Each of our picks above was noted in hundreds of customer reviews to provide exceptional softness and to fit all body types in equally flattering ways.

Performance While in Motion

The way leggings perform during physical activity was among our top considerations. We looked at factors such as compression, support, breathability, and mobility, as well as whether the leggings held up during high-impact activities and intense workouts. We also considered how well the leggings handled sweat and moisture.

Why Is Athleta So Popular?

Over the years, Athleta has earned brand recognition and customer loyalty for demonstrating the quality of its clothing. Their high-performance designs have proven to be buttery soft, hug the body in all the right ways, and last significantly longer than competing brands. So, although you'll pay more, you won't have to replace your leggings as often as you would with alternative brands. The brand has listened to customers' desires and truly honed its craft.

Why Is Fabric So Important for Leggings?

If you're after the best leggings that aren't see-through, material matters. The material your leggings are made of also directly impacts their fit, comfort, breathability, and performance. Most people want flattering, stretchy, comfortable leggings that provide flexibility and support for light daily activities and intense workouts, and the fabric determines whether or not the leggings deliver. The most common materials used for leggings include spandex and elastane, which are highly elastic and can stretch up to 500% of their original size.

How To Pick a Pair of Leggings

Here are a few considerations to ensure you get the best fit, comfort, and performance:

Purpose: Consider if you will use your leggings for a specific activity, such as running or yoga, or for casual wear and lounging. Specific activities like these might require features like moisture-wicking or compression, so choose leggings that are designed for your intended use.

Fabric: Fabric can determine the comfort, durability, and stretch of leggings. Look for fabrics like spandex, elastane, or Lycra, which are stretchy and have good recovery. Other materials like nylon, polyester, and cotton are durable and breathable.

Fit: Leggings should fit snugly, but they shouldn't constrict movement or fit too tightly. Look for leggings with a high waistband that provides support and keeps your pants up. Make sure to check the sizing chart and measure yourself to find the best fit.

Length: Leggings come in different lengths, including full-length, capri, and shorts. Consider the length that's most suitable for your activity and style preferences.

Brand: Look into reputable brands with a good reputation for producing quality leggings. We've provided some excellent starting points above. If you're still struggling to choose a brand, read reviews and ask for recommendations from friends, influencers, or fitness professionals.

Style: Leggings come in various styles and designs, including solid colors, prints, and textures, making them a great way to express yourself. Choose something that complements your personal style and matches your other workout gear or outfits, whether that be loud animal prints, soft neutral solids, basic black, or fun geometric shapes.

Features: Some leggings have added features that make them more functional and convenient. If you need something to hold your credit card while at the gym, for example, look for the best leggings with pockets. Or, if you run a lot and need your leggings to stay in place, opt for a pair with a no-slip waistband.
