Most local water users meet March savings goal
Foothill Municipal Water District General Manager Nina Jazmadarian attributed the savings partly to rain and partly to customers’ response to increased reductions.
Thanks to a series of March rainstorms, Foothill Municipal Water District customers used 34% less water in March than they did during the same month in 2013, according to a district release issued Tuesday.
The increased savings bring retail agencies served by the district — including the local La Cañada Irrigation District, Valley Water Co. and the Crescenta Valley and Mesa Crest water districts — even closer to meeting state reduction mandates, which were officially lowered in February to ensure conservation rates continue.

In March, Crescenta Valley Water District customers reduced usage by 29%, well above the newly adjusted target of 18%, while residents served by the Mesa Crest Water District used 45% less water, compared to a 25% mandate.
Customers of Valley Water Co. saved 33%, just shy of a new target of 34%, while Rubio Canyon Land and Water Assn. saved 26%, failing to hit a 34% mandate.
FMWD General Manager Nina Jazmadarian attributed the savings partly to rain and partly to customers’ response to increased reductions in the face of a 10-day shutdown from Metropolitan Water District to accommodate infrastructure upgrades at a La Verne facility.
“We really appreciated customers turning off their irrigation systems during that period of limited water availability,” Jazmadarian said in the release.
