A suspected mail thief was caught early Thursday after allegedly fishing mail out of a La Crescenta post office mail box and slot, police said.

Just before 4:30 a.m., an officer saw a man — later identified as 27-year-old Marlos Gonzalo Merlos, of Los Angeles — walking away from a post office located at 3300 Foothill Blvd. with an “unusual” bulge underneath his jacket, said Glendale Police Sgt. Robert William.

Officers discovered that he was hiding the adhesive fishing device, which was stuck to “numerous” pieces of mail stolen from the post office’s outdoor mailbox and indoor mail slot, under his jacket, William said.

In the suspect’s car nearby, police found another fishing tool, as well as mail allegedly stolen from Glendale, Burbank, San Dimas, Arcadia, Santa Clarita and Los Angeles.

Merlos was arrested on suspicion of burglary.
