Briefs: ‘Eaters’ coach picked

UC Irvine women’s soccer assistant coach Danielle de Seriere was honored among a select few as part of the 2016-17 cohort of the National Soccer Coaches Assn. of America’s 30 Under 30 Program.

The program is a year-long education and mentorship opportunity for up-and-comers who have made soccer coaching their career of choice. The program was created to support fledgling coaches and foster their growth at a crucial point in the vocation.

Of the 350 applicants, 15 men and 15 women were selected as de Seriere joins the group as only one of four Division I coaches chosen. Her sister Amber, head coach at West Los Angeles College, was chosen to the program last year.

Anteaters head coach Scott Juniper was moved by the committee’s decision.

“Danielle is an exciting young coach who has been recognized for her potential to continue to grow. It is an honor for one of our staff to be invited into their program and I know ‘D’ will make the most of the opportunity.”

The program just launched in 2013, and it is designed to give participants exposure to the association’s membership with the opportunity to take advantage of education offerings, such as diplomas and the NSCAA Convention to be held this year in Los Angeles.

A former standout goalkeeper for the Anteaters, de Seriere is entering her third season as a UCI assistant.

Anteaters honored

The Big West Conference named 53 UC Irvine athletes as academic all-conference for winter and spring sports.

To be eligible, student-athletes are required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average, complete one full year at their school prior to the season for which the award is being received, and to have competed in at least half their team’s contests.
