Boys’ water polo: Osborne named Sunset MVP

Huntington Beach High senior center Quinten Osborne is the Sunset League MVP in boys’ water polo for the recently completed season.

Osborne is joined on the first-team all-league by Oilers teammates Jacob Cavano, Garrett Zaan, Curtis Jarvis and Patrick Saunders. Newport Harbor’s Cole Brosnan, Max Sandberg and Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt are also first-team all-league selections.

Edison’s Austin Cozza and Cameron Davidson, as well as Fountain Valley’s Jake Huynen and Marina’s Leo Yuno also earned first-team honors.

Osborne led the Oilers with 62 goals, helping them win their third straight Sunset League title. Huntington Beach (24-4) went on to advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 1 title match for the first time in program history before falling to Orange Lutheran, 9-7.

Saunders, a senior goalie, led the league with 214 saves. Jarvis, a junior left-hander, was second on the Oilers with 56 goals. Cavano, a junior, scored 32 goals for the Oilers and Zaan, a junior center, finished with 19 goals.

Brosnan, a senior lefty and co-captain, along with senior Turnbow-Lindenstadt and junior goalie Sandberg helped Newport Harbor finish 20-9 and 4-1 in league for second place. The Sailors advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division 1 playoffs before losing a tight match to top-seeded Los Angeles Loyola, 12-11.

Cozza, a senior, led Edison with 53 goals and Davidson, a sophomore, had 25 goals. The Chargers finished 11-14 and 3-2 in league, good for third place. They beat Corona Santiago, 9-8, in a Division 3 wild-card game before losing at top-seeded eventual champion Oaks Christian, 17-3.

Huynen, a junior, helped Fountain Valley finish 13-14, 1-4 in league for fifth place.

Yuno, a senior, led the league with 134 goals for Marina. He finished his high school career with a program-record 412 goals. The Vikings were 13-14, 0-5 in league.

Local players on the second team all-league included Matthew Robert, Ryan Hurst and Ethan Wojciechowski of Huntington Beach, Nic Rimlinger and Jackson Westerman of Newport Harbor, Nicholas Wong and Conor Halloran of Edison, Ben Schmiesing and Kyle Graham of Fountain Valley, and Adelrahman Amin of Marina.
