Century 6, Newport Harbor 5: The Centurions (7-2-1) fended off the Sailors (2-6) despite being outhit, 8-3.

Century 5, Newport Harbor 4: Diana Surber went 3 for 3 with two RBI, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the sweep.

TRACK AND FIELD

Corona del Mar High started its track and field season in grand fashion, producing six event winners in the Irvine Invitational on Saturday.

On the track, Leif Hellgren starred as the winner of the seeded 1,600-meter race. The senior ran a time of four minutes, 25 seconds to come away victorious.

John Schlegel completed a lap in 53.02 seconds to win the 400, and Gigi Lee ran 2:28 to take the girls’ 800.

Mason Crane headlined in the field. The Sea Kings thrower produced efforts of 47 feet, eight inches and 149 feet, nine inches to win the shot put and discus, respectively.

Morgan Simon won girls’ pole vault with a clearance of 10 feet.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Capistrano Valley Relays

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO --- Newport Harbor High set three school records in the Capo Valley Relays finals Saturday at Capo Valley High.

The Sailors’ 6x50-yard freestyle relay of Ayla Spitz, Carly Yasko, Zoe Spitz, Dinny Stevens, Kili Skibby and Kaela Whelan finished second in 2:27.91. The Spitz sisters, Yasko and Stevens swam a 1:37.18 on the first four legs of the race, breaking the Sailors’ 200 free relay record.

The Newport Harbor 4x100 freestyle relay of Ayla Spitz, Yasko, Zoe Spitz and Stevens swam a 3:30.53, good for second place at the meet. It also broke a school record that had stood since 2000.

Finally, the Sailors’ 4x50 medley relay of Ayla Spitz, Skibby, Zoe Spitz and Yasko swam a 1:48.47, good for fourth place at the relays and another school record.

“I’m super-stoked,” Newport Coach Brian Melstrom said. “I thought we had a chance to break all three [records], and we crushed all three.”

BOYS’ TENNIS

Prep Classic

Sage Hill won its own Prep Classic tournament for the first time in the tournament’s 14-year history on Saturday.

The Lightning went 3-0 in the four-team tournament. They beat Windward Academy and Oaks Christian by 9-0 scores, and JSerra, 5-4.

Sage Hill senior Adam Langevin earned tournament singles MVP honors, while teammates Emin Torlic, Ian Huang and Robert Gerschultz also made the all-tournament team.
