High School Roundup: Costa Mesa baseball shuts out Artesia

BASEBALL

Costa Mesa 8, Artesia 0

LAKEWOOD — Skylar Manning threw a five-hitter for the visiting Mustangs, striking out six in the opening game of the Orange County Division Newport Elks Tournament on Thursday.

Dylan Schafer went four for five with three runs batted in and two doubles, and Omar Munoz was three for four with two RBIs and two doubles.

The Mustangs (2-1) continue tournament play on Saturday, when they play host to Rancho Alamitos at 11 a.m.

Newport Harbor 3, Troy 1

FULLERTON — Cameron Mahaffy improved to 2-0 on the season with his five-inning stint in the visiting Sailors’ Foothill Division game in the Newport Elks Tournament on Thursday.

AJ Stefano, who got the save with one inning of work, went two for four with a run batted in.

Newport Harbor’s John Olmstead and Brad Siegel each went two for three.

The Sailors (3-1) have a home date in the tournament with San Juan Hills on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Corona del Mar 5, Laguna Beach 3

Chazz Martinez led the Sea Kings in their season opener with a complete-game five-hitter, and he also went two for two with a two-run home run and a single on Thursday at CdM.

Dante Faicchio homered for Laguna Beach (2-1).

CdM (1-0) will next play at Santa Fe Springs on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Century 3, Estancia 1

SANTA ANA — Freshman Jake Covey threw five innings, striking out four while giving up three runs and three hits in the Eagles’ Orange County Division game in the Newport Elks Tournament on the road Thursday.

Brian Rodriguez and Colin Gardner each doubled for Estancia (2-2).

The Eagles resume tournament play at home against Sage Hill on Saturday at 11 a.m.

BOYS’ GOLF

Huntington Beach 199, Newport Harbor 204

Peter Di Bernardo shot four-under-par 32 to lead the Oilers to the Sunset League win on Thursday at SeaCliff Country Club.

Sophomores Ethan Barnes and Campbell Norris both shot 37, and senior Noah Mayne carded a 39 for Newport Harbor (0-1).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor def. San Clemente

Ohio State-bound middle blocker Spencer Lawrence had four kills in the Sailors’ 25-15, 25-20, 25-19 sweep at home on Thursday.

Newport Harbor improved to 2-0.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Costa Mesa 86, Paramount 79

Augie Cunningham, Misael Andino and Nick Ly each won two events for the Mustangs in Thursday’s nonleague meet at Costa Mesa High.

Cunningham won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.62, and the 500 free in 5:17.47. Andino won the 200 IM (2:08.28) and the 100 butterfly (56.18), while Ly won the 50 free (23.42) and the 100 breaststroke (1:07.47).

Jacob Petersen won the 100 free in 51.37 for Mesa.

The two boys’ 400 freestyle relays both had to place in the top three for Costa Mesa to win the meet. The relay of Petersen, Cunningham, Ly, and Andino placed first in 3.28:09, and the relay of Caedmon Fisher, Teak Zachary, Diego Vidrio and Grant Christensen finished third in 3.47:49 to allow Costa Mesa to win the meet.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Costa Mesa 84, Paramount 81

Kaylie Tickenoff, Alyssa LeCours and Sarah Catania swept the 100-yard breaststroke for the Mustangs in Thursday’s nonleague meet at Costa Mesa High.

Tickenoff touched in 1:22.55, LeCours in 1:23.61 and Catania in 1:25.48.

Lauren Kiefer won the 500 free in 6:09.04, and Kendra Ferguson won the 100 back in 1:12.25. Ferguson, Tickenoff, Cialee Enslow and Kiefer won the 200 medley relay in 2:15.11.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Sage Hill 12, Santa Margarita 6

Adam Langevin swept at No. 1 singles for the Lightning in Wednesday’s nonleague season opener.

The No. 1 doubles team of Ian Huang and Han Chin also swept all three sets for Sage Hill, which hosts the four-team Lightning Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
