Boys’ Soccer: Edison’s Kemper is Sunset MVP

Edison High senior midfielder Sam Kemper received the Sunset League MVP award for lifting the boys’ soccer team to the Sunset League championship, the program’s second since the 2013-14 season.

Edison senior Drew Brummett was the league’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player, and Edison senior forward Dominic Bair and Newport Harbor senior forward Bryant Reyes shared the Most Outstanding Offensive Player honor.

Kemper, Brummett and Bair led the Chargers (21-6-1, 8-2-0 in league) to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs and the semifinals of the CIF Southern California Regional Division I playoffs.

Edison lost at home to No. 2-seeded Redlands East Valley, 1-0, in the section quarterfinals, and in penalty kicks, 5-4, at El Toro in the regional semifinals.

Kemper finished with nine goals and 11 assists.

Brummett played a vital role in Edison holding opponents scoreless 15 times.

Bair produced 18 goals and eight assists.

Reyes totaled 11 goals.

Edison seniors Collier Maruska, Kobe Wood, Ryan Ruvalcaba and Brian Piscopo garnered first-team accolades.

Newport Harbor senior Elijan Mastnak was on the first team. He helped the Sailors (7-11-3, 5-5-0) place third in league and advance to the Division 1 playoffs, a season after they went winless in league.

The Sailors lost at Long Beach Wilson, 1-0, in the first round.

The other first-team picks were Huntington Beach seniors Christian Catano and Jack Fults, Fountain Valley senior Zachary Young, and Marina senior Geoffrey Delorie.

The Oilers (8-11-4, 4-5-1) finished fourth in league, followed by the Barons (8-8-3, 3-6-1) and Marina (4-13-3, 1-6-3).

The second-team selections were Edison junior Mitchell Wilson, sophomore Chase Bullock and senior Jared Velazquez, Newport Harbor junior Alvin Mancilla, senior Chandler Siemonsma and senior Jonathan Gascon, Huntington Beach senior Danny Cerda and sophomore Seth Corbin, Fountain Valley juniors Anthony Tobon and Ali Shah, and Marina seniors Brian Hernandez and Gerry Delorie.
