High School Roundup: Newport Harbor boys’ basketball wins Santa Maria tournament

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 75, Santa Maria 41

SANTA MARIA — Senior shooting guard Charlie Stassel finished with 17 points, lifting the Sailors to the Santa Maria Holiday Tournament title on Wednesday.

Stassel earned tournament MVP honors for the second time this season for leading Newport Harbor (14-2) to its second tournament championship.

Brandon Phillips finished with 17 points, earning all-tournament honors.

The Sailors, ranked No. 14 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA poll, play host to archrival Corona del Mar (11-4) in the Battle of the Bay game on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Corona del Mar 84, Drake 81 (OT)

KENTFIELD — Senior guard Sam Kobrine finished with 30 points and five three-pointers for the Sea Kings, who placed fifth in the Don Bambauer Memorial Holiday Classic at Marin Catholic on Wednesday.

Kobrine, who had 16 points in the fourth quarter, helped CdM overcome a 20-point deficit in the third quarter. He made the all-tournament team.

Taeveon Le produced 14 points, while Matt Ctvrtlik added 13 points and D.J. Rodman had 12.

The Sea Kings (11-4), ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3A poll, play at Newport Harbor (14-2) in the Battle of the Bay rivalry game on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Sage Hill 71, Escondido Charter 42

CARLSBAD — Chance Keuhnel was selected to the all-tournament team after leading the Lightning to the victory in the consolation championship of the Tri-City Christian tournament at Army-Navy Academy on Wednesday.

Sage Hill improved to 7-4.

The Lightning open Academy League play at home against Oxford Academy on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Oak Hills 51, Corona del Mar 34

CHINO HILLS — Natalia Bruening had 15 points for the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s semifinal game of the Ayala Best of the West Tournament.

Melody Yoo scored five points for CdM (9-3), which plays Bishop Amat for third place at 6 p.m. Thursday at Ayala High.

The Sea Kings then play at rival Newport Harbor in the Battle of the Bay game on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
