High School Roundup: NHHS boys’ basketball to play in Santa Maria tourney title game

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Santa Maria Holiday Tournament

SANTA MARIA — Senior Brandon Phillips finished with 12 points, helping Newport Harbor beat Morro Bay, 56-32, in the semifinals on Tuesday.

The Sailors (13-2) face host Santa Maria in the championship game on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Newport Harbor is looking to win its second tournament this season.

Andrew Laidlaw had nine points for Newport Harbor, ranked No. 14 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA poll.

Newport Harbor won it first two games at the tournament on Monday, beating Templeton, 69-48, and El Monte, 76-41. Charlie Stassel had 28 points against Templeton, while Zach Blaine had 17 points against El Monte.

Tri-City Christian tournament

CARLSBAD — Chance Kuehnel scored 16 points to lead Sage Hill School to a 59-43 win over Carlsbad Pacific Ridge in a consolation semifinal at Army-Navy School on Tuesday.

Brett Super added 10 points for Sage Hill (6-4), which will play in the consolation championship against Escondido Charter Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Army-Navy.

Earlier Tuesday, Max Nanula scored 15 points to lead the Lightning past Maranatha Christian of San Diego, 66-25. Greg Park added 13 points.

Don Bambauer Memorial Holiday Classic

KENTFIELD — Senior Sam Kobrine had 20 points in Corona del Mar’s 52-36 win against Millbrae Mills on Tuesday.

The Sea Kings (10-4) play in the fifth- and sixth-place game against San Anselmo Drake on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

On Monday, Kobrine had 14 points in a 71-44 quarterfinal loss to Chino Hills Ayala.

Arroyo Grande 52, Costa Mesa 46

SANTA BARBARA — Senior Mason Tufuga produced 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in the Mustangs’ first round of bracket play in the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic at Santa Barbara High on Monday.

Calvin Ko scored nine points for Costa Mesa (5-7), while Simon Daniel grabbed seven rebounds.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Corona del Mar 10, Santa Barbara 9

CdM senior Bridgett Storm scored the eventual game-winning goal to lift the Sea Kings in the quarterfinals of the Holiday Cup tournament Tuesday at CdM.

Jaleh Moaddeli scored four goals for CdM (4-0), ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 1. Storm, Emily Ritner and Sarah Lawson scored two each. Santa Barbara is ranked No. 7 in Division 1.

Earlier Tuesday, CdM got by Rosary, 9-4, in the first round. Storm, Lawson and Moaddeli each scored twice, while Chloe Harbilas, Sophie Wallace and Abigail Klein added goals.

The Sea Kings play top-ranked Laguna Beach in a Holiday Cup semifinal at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday at Newport Harbor High.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Corona del Mar 68, Los Osos 59

CHINO HILLS — Natalia Bruening had 22 points and 12 rebounds as Corona del Mar prevailed in the quarterfinals of the Ayala Best of the West Tournament on Tuesday at Ayala High.

Krista Anderson had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and Melody Yoo had 11 points with two three-pointers.

CdM also beat Fontana Kaiser, 47-7, in the first round Monday. Bruening had 16 points and five blocks, while Yoo and Kat Hess each scored seven points.

CdM (9-2) plays Los Osos in the tournament semifinals Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Westminster 63, Estancia 45

GARDEN GROVE — Finley Garnett had 22 points for the Eagles in the Garden Grove tournament game on Tuesday.

Maya Van Den Heever had 12 points and six assists, while Nefertiti Van Den Heever had six points and nine rebounds. Sam Wagner scored five.

Estancia, which lost to Legacy, 71-40, in another tournament game Monday, is now 8-5.

Tri City Christian tournament

VISTA — Kate Knollenberg scored 32 points to lead Sage Hill School to a 72-43 win over Oceanside Mission Vista in a fifth-place semifinal on Tuesday.

Kenna Knollenberg and Heather Park added 12 points each and Nadia Akbari scored 11 points for the Lightning (6-3).

Earlier in the day, Sage Hill lost to Encino Holy Martyrs Armenian, 54-43. Kenna Knollenberg scored 20 points and Park added 14 points.

Kate Knollenberg scored 21 points to lead the Lightning to a 69-42 win over Carlsbad Pacific Ridge in a Tri-City Christian tournament opening game on Monday.

Park had 18 points, Kenna Knollenberg added 17 points and Emily Hublitz finished with nine for Sage Hill.

The Lightning will face Rio Hondo in the fifth-place game on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

North Orange County Classic

CORONA — Corona del Mar played Dana Hills to a scoreless tie in a consolation game Tuesday at Corona High, concluding its tournament.

Kat Hess made eight saves for CdM (5-4-4), which also lost to Chino Hills, 2-0, in a game earlier Tuesday at Chino Hills High.

The Sea Kings split their first two tournament games Monday, losing to Norco, 2-0, but beating Granite Hills, 2-1. Hailey Neumann and Leah Givant scored against Granite Hills, with assists to Givant and Maddie Binder.

CdM resumes play in its Pacific Coast League opener at Woodbridge on Jan. 7.
