College Roundup: UCI falls at Kansas

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Kansas 78, UC Irvine 53

LAWRENCE, Kansas — The visiting Anteaters trailed the No. 2-ranked Jayhawks, 28-26, at halftime, before being overrun in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Mamadou Ndiaye, a 7-foot-6 junior, led UCI (10-5) with 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots in 26 minutes.

Junior Ioannes Dimakopoulos had 10 points in 13 minutes off the bench and was two for two from three-point range.

The rest of the Anteaters were zero for 13 from threedom, including six misses by Luke Nelson, who was three for 12 from the field.

Kansas improved to 11-1.

UCI plays host to New Mexico State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Orange Coast 74, Canyons 56

SANTA CLARITA — Sophomore Jamaal Lee had 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Pirates in the championship game of the Cougar Holiday Classic on Tuesday at College of the Canyons.

Lee made seven of 11 field-goal attempts and added four assists and two steals as OCC (6-8) won its fourth straight.

Canyons fell to 5-7.

On Monday, OCC topped Barstow, 67-55, in the opening round of the tournament, behind 14 points each by Josh Mendoza and Ryan Fusco.

OCC forced 24 turnovers in each game.

The Pirates return to action on Jan. 6, when they open Orange Empire Conference play against visiting Cypress at 5 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 80, Trinity Western 54

Melissa Norman and Maya Kennedy had 15 points apiece to lead the host Lions in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Norman had nine rebounds, while Kennedy added seven assists to help the No. 1-ranked Lions improve to 5-3.

Lindsey Harter had 13 points on five-of-seven field-goal shooting off the bench.

Samantha Doucette had 12 points for the winners.

USC 75, UC Irvine 56

Senior guard Raelyn Cheung-Sutton had 11 points and five assists, while teammate Irene Chavez had 10 points and seven assists for the visiting Anteaters in a nonconference game Monday.

UCI (3-9) had 22 turnovers and made just two of 11 three-point attempts.

USC is 12-0.
