College Roundup: UCI takes down Norfolk State to win Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational

UC Irvine 80, Norfolk State 62
EL PASO, Texas — Mamadou Ndiaye had 21 points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots in 19 minutes to lead the Anteaters in the championship game of the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational on Tuesday at UTEP.
Ndiaye, a 7-foot-6 junior, made eight of nine field-goal attempts top help UCI improve to 10-4.
Luke Nelson had 17 points, four rebounds and three assists and Jonathan Galloway had seven points and nine rebounds.
Mike Best and Jaron Martin had 10 points apiece for UCI, for which Alex Young had six assists to move within one of tying Raimonds Miglinieks for the school career record of 475 from 1994 to 1996.
UCI held Norfolk State to 28.1% field-goal shooting (16 for 57) and posted a 46-33 rebounding advantage.
UCI visits Kansas on Tuesday.

EL PASO, Texas — Junior guard Luke Nelson had 16 points and senior forward Mike Best had 14 to lead the Anteaters in the first round of the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational on Monday at UTEP.
UCI, which improved to 9-4, used a 28-13 run to open the second half to turn a 30-25 halftime deficit into a 53-43 lead with 7:13 left.
Senior guard Alex Young had six points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals, while junior center Mamadou Ndiaye had five points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
UCI held the Bearkats to 34.5% field-goal shooting and shot 43.1% itself, including 55.7% after halftime (15 for 27).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sacramento State 126, UC Irvine 78
SACRAMENTO — The visiting Anteaters had 38 turnovers and allowed a program-worst scoring output in the nonconference game Tuesday.
Sacramento State (307) was 17 for 51 from three-point range, while UCI (3-9) was one for eight from beyond the arc.
Chloe Kellum made seven of nine field-goal attempts on her way to a career-best 16 points in 12 reserve minutes for the ‘Eaters.
UCI senior Mokun Fajemisin had 12 points and shared the team rebounding lead with five.
Senior Raelyn Cheung-Sutton had four points and six assists for UCI, which visits USC on Monday at 7 p.m.
Sacramento State’s point total was a school record as it had six players score in double figures.
The 48-point margin was the worst defeat suffered by UCI since a 75-23 drubbing by Arizona State in 2008.

San Jose State 79, UC Irvine 58
SAN JOSE — Freshman Tayla Jackson had a career-high 11 rebounds and Raelyn Cheung-Sutton had a game-best nine assists to pace the visiting Anteaters on Sunday.
Mokun Fajemisin and Irene Chavez had 10 points apiece to lead UCI, which had 19 offensive rebounds to help post a 44-42 advantage on the glass.
Jackson had seven offensive boards.
San Jose State (2-8) was nine for 24 from three-point range, while UCI was four for 18.
